Sunday Bus Walks – Twice Brewed, Northumberland

Longer Walk
Starting the walk from Simonburn, which is 4.5 miles from Chollerford.
Route: Simonburn, Castle Lane, Goatstones, Ravensheugh Crags, Great Lonbrough, Harvest Green, Folly Lake, Sewingshield’s Crags, King’s Wicket, Ridley Common, Hotbank, Hadrian’s Wall, Twice Brewed.
Distance: 12.50 miles with 1,300 ft. of ascent.
Description: Some good tracks, lanes & paths. Some access land to walk & a little road walking. Starting from the picturesque hamlet of Simonburn with its lovely church, then heading primarily West / South West through wooded areas & passing by imposing crags & a stone circle. Heading towards the Roman Wall. Great views from the crags on the wall of all the Loughs below & behind the wall.

Middle Walk
Route: The walk begins at Steel Rigg car park and down to Peel Crag and on to Hadrian’s Wall. We continue past the fort at Housesteads onto Kings Hill before crossing over the wall at Kings Wicket. We then turn North at the intersection with the Pennine way. Passing Cragend, East Stonefolds, Green Lee, Gibbs Hill and joining the tarmac road leading back to the Sill.
Distance: 10.7 Miles with 1,400 ft. of ascent.
Description: The walk includes an amazing section of the Hadrian’s wall. The undulating terrain offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. A mixture of Hadrian’s wall, open pastures (muddy in places), paths, tracks and a small section of road.

Shorter Walk
Route: The walk begins at Steel Rigg car park. Then lane walking down to Gibbs Hill, along to Greenlee Lough, Stonefolds, joining the Pennine Way at Cragend, Hotbank Crags, Peatrigg, back to Steel Rigg, and then down to the Sill to finish.
Distance: 8 Miles with 600 ft. of ascent.
Description: Some lane walking at the beginning and end. The walk comprises field walking, paths and tracks with some short stretches of muddy/boggy ground. The return parallels Hadrian’s wall on the North side comprising meadows and fields offering magnificent views of the whole area and the Wall.
